There are 7,200 islands divided up in to three main areas. Luzon the largest island, Visayas and Mindanao the second largest island. Of the population, 37% is 0-14 years old, 59% are 15-64 years old and 4% are 65 or older. That totals out to over 55% of the population are below the age of 18 years old. The Philippines is the only country in Asia which calls itself a Christian nation. Roman Catholic 83%, Protestant 9%, Muslim 5% and Buddhist- others 3%. The number of families living below poverty level is 36%. This makes a situation in which many of the children are neglected, abused or malnourished. Despite the government push for family planning many do not use it and a large family of 6 or more children is common. This adds to the already existing over tasked government agencies. Help is not reaching the children. The number of cases of sexual abuse and maltreatment is up 20% and most the government run orphanages are over populated. The Philippines has one of the highest reported cases of incest than any country in Asia. There are an estimated 70,000 child prostitutes in Manila alone. Child labor is a common practice and although it is illegal it is not enforced. ![]() a Ministry of Youth With A Mission ![]() |
